MUNISING — A missing hiker was found safe after an overnight search at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

National Park Service officials say the 51-year-old Wisconsin man was reported overdue from a hike in the Miners Falls area shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. He had left the trail to fish along Miners River at 3:00 p.m. but did not return as planned. His brother reported his absence after an unsuccessful search.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Thursday, searchers found the hiker in good condition after rings from his cell phone helped them narrow down the search area. The man was able to hike out under his own power.

Officials say 28 searchers helped find the hiker, including three Michigan State Police dog teams, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, and personnel from the National Park Service, Michigan Department of Corrections, Alger County Sheriff’s Department, and Eastern Upper Peninsula Search and Rescue.
