SAULT STE. MARIE — Part of the Soo Locks has been closed for emergency repairs.

Officers from the Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say the MacArthur Lock is experiencing mechanical issues. One set of gates on the lock has been failing to close properly. The Corps closed the lock Thursday and drained it over the weekend. The staff at the locks is still working to find the source of the issue.

Officials estimate the lock will be closed for at least another six days. The Corps has notified the shipping industry about expected delays, and ships are being rerouted through the adjacent Poe Lock.
