Local museum hosts open house
NEGAUNEE — A local museum’s upcoming open house will give visitors some new exhibits to peek at.
The Michigan Iron Industry Museum will be kicking off the summer this Sunday with a White Water concert and an introduction to some of its newest exhibits.
The museum, which has been standing on Forge Road in Negaunee since 1987, is a useful tool in learning about the iron industry. Recently, historians have been adding a focal point on those who worked in the mines.
“We tell the story of the iron industry in Michigan and we also tell a more local story about the Carp River Forge which forged the first iron on the Lake Superior Iron Ranges, not far from where the museum is,” said Michigan Iron Industry Museum Historian Troy Henderson. “A recent exhibit upgrade adds to that story about the people who actually lived here in the 1840’s and 1850’s.”
New to the museum is a display featuring tidbits of facts and artifacts on Carp River Forge. They also got their hands on a microscope used by a local scientist who worked for Cleveland Cliffs in the fifties.
White Water will be performing at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the museum and admission is free.
