Local lighthouse celebrating milestone birthday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse has a huge birthday celebration coming up.

The 150th year of the lighthouse is being celebrated tomorrow at the Maritime Museum in Marquette. The lighthouse has become a large part of Marquette’s history and has seen some changes throughout the years. One local artist who was inspired by the lighthouse decided to create a special image in honor of the celebration.

“It’s the 150th anniversary of the lighthouse so this is a special image in terms of the rarity of the aurora event that was captured with the image, so that makes is a kind of special image” said Photographer Shawn Malone.

Employees of the Maritime Museum want to remind that public that it is important for people in the area to know the lighthouses significance and how it kept sailors safe for many years. On Saturday, anyone is invited to stop by for free lighthouse tours and even free food.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun from one to four, it’s just a great day so please come on out, have fun with us and enjoy the time of this and help us celebrate the 150th birthday of the Marquette Harbor lighthouse” said Maritime Museum Seasonal Manager, Ryan Dubay.

There will be a variety of activities to participate in and several different organizations will be stopping by, such as the Marquette City Fire Department.
