MARQUETTE — If reading makes you think of quiet libraries and muffled book stores, think again!
Thursday night was the first in a series of creative readings at the Ore Dock Brewing Company called Bards and Brews. Andrea Scarpino, the UP’s Poet Laureate organized the event as part of her initiatives to promote poetry in the area.
“I think Ore Dock has worked really hard at being a community centered space, and I thought, ‘Well, what if we did a reading series in a place that’s a little bit more unexpected?’ So a lot of people kind of assume that universities are kind of where you go for poetry readings of different sorts,” said Scarpino.
“Reading shouldn’t be a solemn event. Drinking and dancing should pretty much always be a part of it,” added Jennifer Howard, one of the Bards for the evening.
“I’ve read in plenty of bars, so I feel just at home and I actually feel more myself with an alcoholic beverage in hand!” said the other Bard, Matthew Gavin Frank.
Frank read from his book The Mad Feast and Howard from her book How to End Up. There are plenty of other great authors scheduled to read in the coming months.
