Local artists awarded for their efforts

The City of Marquette will host their 17th Annual Art Awards at the Peter White Public Library tomorrow night.

Some of the brightest stars in the art world will be honored for their contributions to the community. A wide variety of fields will be recognized. Everyone from volunteers to educators and even local businesses will be rewarded for their efforts.

“It’s really going to be a special night. And I think it’s important because it’s not often that artists get thanked: ‘Thank you for doing what you’re doing.’ People in the community that kind of work behind the scenes volunteering or promoting art, it’s our chance to thank them for doing what they do,” explained Tiina Harris, the City of Marquette Arts & Culture Center Director.

Two art galleries will also be on display in conjunction with the event.

“The exhibit that I’m standing in is work created by students in workshops both here at the Art Center and at the Bonifas Art Center in Escanaba. And it’s an example of ‘If you want to take an art class, what’s available to you in our region?’ The other exhibit is the Lake Superior Art Association’s Members Show. It’s a chance to see many different kinds and styles of work by the Lake Superior Art Association, and they also give out awards that evening,” Harris added.

The reception starts at 5 p.m. complete with oer d’oeuvres, cakes, and live performances from some of the award winners.
