Upper Peninsula Lions Clubs are gathering this weekend in Houghton for their annual U.P. convention.

The event will take place at the Franklin Square Inn and is hosted by the Chassell and Houghton Lions Clubs. The group’s mission is to give back and help others in need. The organization’s outreach stretches far beyond the Copper Country as well.

“It’s wonderful to be a volunteer and to give back to the community that we live in,” Chassell Lions Club member Lois Berg said. “We also give back at the state level. We give back on the U.S., national level, and we give back at the international level.”

Volunteers set up a drug take back station at a nursing home today to help people dispose of unwanted prescription medications. It’s one of the many events the Lions hold to support local communities.

“It’s a group of men and women who really want to serve one another and serve their communities and their world,” Berg said. “And anybody out there who wants to do that, find a Lions club and we make that happen.”

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. A full list of weekend events can be found on their website.
