Lingering Effects of Winter Storm

It’s now been more than 24 hours since the winter storm started to roll through, but more than 2,500 UPPCO electric customers are still without power.

UPPCO says Gwinn, Negaunee and Ishpeming were hit the hardest.

At 5:30 tonight, more than 1,100 customers in the Gwinn area were still in the dark, along with nearly 400 in Negaunee and almost 500 in Ishpeming.

The roads were still messy throughout the day but were much better than they were last night.

The city of Marquette had very little snow.

The National Weather Service had predicted two to four inches, and the snow cover appeared to be in the low end of that range.

But the picture was very different just a few miles inland from there in Negaunee Township.

That area had several more inches than the shoreline had, and the city of Ishpeming saw even more snow.

The prediction for areas with higher terrain had been 10 to 12 inches.

The Marquette, Negaunee, Ishpeming and NICE Schools were among the districts that cancelled classes for today.
