Lights of Love Tree-Lighting in Hancock

The Portage Hospital Auxiliary held the annual Lights of Love Tree-Lighting Ceremony Wednesday in the Portage Health Conference Center. Each year, community members are invited to honor or memorialize loved ones by reserving a light in their name. Names are displayed in the hospital’s lobby during the holiday season, and read aloud during the tree-lighting ceremony.

All proceeds fund scholarships designated for students from Houghton, Baraga, Keweenaw or Ontonagon counties studying in a healthcare field. This year more than $3,000 was raised through the program. Portage Health is donating an additional $2,000, allowing the auxiliary to award $5,000 in scholarships.

“This year Lights of Love was received well,” said Fayth Wolfe, chair of the Lights of Love committee within the Portage Hospital Auxiliary. “We’re extremely excited to be help local students who are pursuing careers in healthcare.”

More than 300 people were honored or remembered at the ceremony.

“This is a very spiritual moment for many people in our community,” said Wolfe.
