Lighting The Way To Savings

A big state grant coming to the U.P. for cost savings on energy is going to help the planet at the same time.

The Michigan Public Service Commission is giving the Superior Watershed Partnership $150,000.

It’ll buy 45,000 compact flourescent light bulbs.

They’re more energy-efficient and longer-lasting than conventional bulbs, to the tune of 7 years or more in typical home use.

About 3,700 U.P. families will each get a dozen bulbs.

The Watershed Partnership also received the same grant last summer, and they’re trying to fan out, spreading the bulbs across the entire region.

Mary Martin of the Watershed Partnership says there should be a significant amount of energy savings, large enough that local utility providers should be able to notice.
