Let the games begin! State Softball Tournament in the U.P.

NEGAUNEE — The Michigan State Girls Softball 10/11 tournament kicked off today in Negaunee.

Everyone at LaCombe Field was visibly excited as the teams walked onto the diamond. The girls came from far and wide to play this weekend. Five teams are in attendance, Tecumseh, Georgetown, Bay County, Escanaba and North Central.

“They’re having a great time. They absolutely love it, that’s why we hold opening ceremonies at big events like this, because it’s all for the girls. They worked all season long to get here. Injuries, some going on vacation and coming back and missing games and upset with moms and dads. Coaches have put a lot of time and effort into this and they’re all volunteers! So, for these girls to be able to come here, into our venue at LaCombe Field and be able to have such a great time like they’re exhibiting now, it just really is a good feeling for us,” said tournament co–director Don Gladwell.

The tournament starts up tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. There will be four rounds, starting with North Central facing off against Bay County. Saturday’s games start at 10:00 a.m. There will be four games and then a break for a few skills competitions. Games will start back up at 6:00. Sunday is the final day of the tournament, and the champion will be decided at three.
