Lehtinen to join NMU Hall of Fame

The Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame will induct four new members on Saturday evening. One of the inductees has been with NMU for more than 30 years.

Dr. John Lehtinen has been working to keep NMU’s athletes in tip top shape since 1981. Every August, Lehtinen meets with every athlete on campus to evaluate their current physical condition.

Since 1985, Lehtinen has been the chief medical officer and head physician for the NMU Olympic Training Site. He has worked at the Pan American Games and at the Summer Olympic games on multiple occasions.

Lehtinen was the head physician at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, which was a fun challenge for the doctor. He has been a volunteer assistant hockey coach with NMU since 2006, something he’s very happy to be involved with.

Lehtinen will be inducted into the NMU Hall of Fame alongside of three other former NMU athletes- Tuomas Tarkki, Shana Ojala and Lindsey Weier.
