League of Women Voters hosts candidate forum
HANCOCK — This past weekend, the League of Women Voters held a forum for candidates that will be on the November ballot to discuss children’s issues and distribute voter registration information.
The event allowed members of the community to interact with the candidates, included the 38th District State Senate candidates, Republican Tom Casperson and Democrat Christopher Germain, as well as State Representative Scott Dianda, who is also running for re-election.
They also were joined by the candidates in the Houghton County Commissioner races and they talked about the importance of this forum.
“In this case, it’s just a chance for me to do a little outreach and to get a hold of a group of voters that I may or may not have had a chance to talk with as I’ve gone door-to-door in that phase of my campaign when I was trying to collect information from voters and see what was on their minds,” County Commission candidate Rich Kasprzak said.
“It gives the public a chance to ask questions and also gives us a chance to express how we feel with regards to the various children’s issues and what Houghton County is doing with regards to children’s issues and things of that nature,” County Commission Anton Pintar said.
Among the topics discussed were K-through-12 school funding and how to help increase the test scores of Michigan students.
