Layoffs at Engineered Machine Products

An Escanaba company that recently brought laid-off employees back to work is making more layoffs.

Engineered Machine Products has laid off 26 people today.

The company says they’re temporary and were done for entirely financial reasons.

Last year, EMP let about 40 people go because of a drop in orders.

They also shut down for 10 days in the summer and cut employees’ work weeks from 40 hours down to 32.

Last fall, things were looking up.

Some of the laid-off employees were called back to work; other workers’ hours were restored.

Company officials had hopes for improving sales, but they say it didn’t happen as past as they’d hoped.
