Deer Harvest numbers down from last year

The number of deer taken back to the Lower Peninsula is down 40 percent from a year ago.

As of last night, 2,374 deer had crossed the Mighty Mac. That’s far fewer than the 7-day total of 3,974 from last year.

Warm, stagnant weather has played a key role in the decline. But, with temperatures expected to drop over the next few days, that tally could go up again.

Meanwhile, the U.P. Wolf Hunt numbers remain unchanged from Wednesday morning’s count. Michigan DNR reports indicate that a total of 8 wolves have been taken thus far. Two wolves have been harvested in Wolf Management Unit A, five in Unit B, and one lone wolf in Unit C.

The U.P. Wolf Hunt is scheduled to continue through the end of the year – or until a total of 43 wolves have been taken.
