Large Crowd in Downtown Houghton for Yooper Luge

A great crowd showed up this weekend on the corner of Isle Royale Street and Shelden Avenue for the fourth annual Yooper Luge. Kids from all ages built their own sleds and rode them down the luge to try to impress the judges. Downtown Development Director Susie Landers says it is one of the more popular events in the Copper Country.

“The community keeps jumping into this event. We had more entrants this year than we’ve ever had. Again, thank you to all the downtown businesses in the city of Houghton for putting this on,” Landers said.

I asked Landers what she thinks is the reason people keep coming out to these events, despite the frigid weather conditions.

“I think it’s the excitement of sledding in downtown, shutting the street off, having the music and a little bit of hot chocolate also,” said Landers.

Prizes were given in categories like Best Decorated and Most Creative Design. Many of the kids got to go home with medals just like the ones they see on TV.
