Lakers beat Wildcats in GLIAC Tourney

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball was beaten by Grand Valley State 74-52 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Senior guard Alyssa Colla scored a game-high 21 points for the Wildcats which moves her into third place on the all-time scoring list with 1,567 career points.

The Lakers shot the ball well in the contest going 26-58 (.448) from the field with 9-19 (.474) coming from beyond the arc. Northern Michigan finished the game going 19-50 (.380) from the field.

The Lakers used a 16-4 run in the first half to jump out to a 25-12 lead with 8:10 remaining in the half. GVSU extended their lead to as large as 16 but a layup from senior guard Lauren Gruber at the buzzer put the halftime score at 38-26.

Grand Valley State opened the second half with an 11-2 run extending their lead out to a 49-28 tally with 15:48 remaining in the game. The Lakers were able to hold onto this comfortable lead cruising to the 74-52 final.

Northern Michigan outrebounded Grand Valley 38-25 with 14 offensive rebounds. The Wildcats also held a 22-18 advantage in the paint but the Lakers were able to score 23 points off of 18 NMU turnovers. The Laker bench also provided GVSU with 20 points to the NMU nine bench points.

Gruber finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, while junior forward Nea Makela and sophomore Bre Gaspervich each pulled down six rebounds.
