Lady Lions earn weekend road split

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Finlandia women’s basketball team earned a split this past weekend at the University of Northwestern-St.Paul Tip-Off Tournament, as they lost to host Northwestern on Friday, 70 to 58 and defeated North Central (MN) on Saturday, 78 to 63.

Senior Marissa Burke (Watersmeet, MI) recorded a double-double in Friday night’s loss to the Eagles as she led the Lions with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Two other Lions scored in double figures, senior Brierra Ruska-Pasanen (Trenary, MI) and freshman Brooke Turin(Ontonagon, MI), each with 10 points. Freshman Valerie Rajala  (L’Anse, MI) came up big for Finlandia as she grabbed 9 rebounds in the contest.

On Saturday, Burke was 1 rebound away from back-to-back double doubles as she again scored 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Again in double figures in points for Finlandia were Turin and Ruska-Pasanen with 17 and 12 points respectively. Rajala again had a solid night on the boards as she grabbed 8 rebounds on the day.

The Lions are now 1-3 on thee season as they prepare for a long road trip downstate to face Calvin College on Saturday, Nov. 29 and Concordia University-Ann Arbor on Sunday, Nov. 30.
