Lady Huskies play scrimmage game at Sherman Field

HOUGHTON — The weekend weather was a relief to many sports teams across the Upper Peninsula, including the Michigan Tech women’s soccer team.

Last week, the Lady Huskies had the first of their two scrimmages cancelled due to weather. But this past weekend, they were able to take on Wisconsin–Stevens Point at Sherman Field, coming away with a 7–0 win. Afterwards, head coach Michelle Jacob talked about what she wanted to accomplish at the end of the scrimmage.

“Just finding out what combinations of players work best and how we can posses the ball still intending on moving forward. We learned a lot today, I think both offensively and defensively, the things that we need to work on but also a lot of things that we’re doing really well and a lot of things for the girls to be proud of,” Jacob said.

MTU is coming off a season where they finished with a 9–6–and–2 record, eventually losing in the GLIAC semi–finals to Ashland. With six seniors coming back, the team likes their chances to improve upon last year’s achievements.

“We have one goal and that’s to win a championship, win the GLIAC and go to the NCAA tournament. That’s our goal. And I think all our seniors, including me, we all have that goal and we want to make that happen. It’s a lot of good spirits in there,” senior forward Jacqueline Mielke said.

“It was great for our girls to get out there and battle. The other team, despite the score, they never stopped working so I think it was a good test for us,” said Jacob.

Fun fact: Coach Jacob was an All–American soccer player at Wisconsin–Stevens Point.
