Lady Huskies defense stifles Lake Erie
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech built up a 38-15 halftime lead and cruised to a 75-35 victory over Lake Erie at the SDC Gym tonight in GLIAC women’s basketball. The Huskies improved to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC by shooting 49 percent from the field and holding the visitors to 25 percent.
The score was 10-9 in favor of Tech just five minutes into the game, but it took the Storm nine more minutes to reach double digits. The Black and Gold used a 12-0 run to build a 22-9 advantage. They then closed the half on a 16-3 spurt for a 23-point advantage at the break.
Brenna Heise scored the first seven points of the second half, and Tech never led by fewer than 23 in the final 20 minutes.
“We proved to ourselves that defense wins games,” said Tech coach Kim Cameron. “I thought we showed a lot of maturity in how we bounced back from our loss on Sunday and how we handled their pressure.”
Morgan Anderson led all scorers with 14 points. Kelli Guy and Heise added 11 apiece to also reach double digits. Danielle Blake had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Lake Erie (7-6, 2-5 GLIAC) had no player over seven points in the contest. They came into the game forcing 25 turnovers per game, but Tech coughed up the ball just 14 times. Only a few of those were direct result of the Storm’s pressure.
Michigan Tech will play the second of its four-game home stand on Saturday (Jan. 10) when Ashland comes to Houghton. Tipoff at the SDC Gym is slated for 12 noon.
