Kingsford football poised for big season

ISHPEMING – The teams with the most experience and skill are usually the ones that play deep into the month of November. The Flivvers would love to be one of those teams left playing come crunch time.

Kingsford is coming off of a 7-3 campaign. The Flivvers have made the playoffs seven of the least eight years. When you look at Kingsford, you’ll notice right away that they have size, especially in the trenches. The Flivvers scrimmaged three teams in Ishpeming on Thursday, which was just what the doctor ordered for head coach Chris Hofer.

“You know it’s that time of the year and you’re out here to see where you need improvements,” said Hofer. All of the stuff we need to work on this year is very, very, very doable, so that’s a good thing.”

Through two weeks of practice, Hofer said he’s happy with the progress his team has made.

“Good effort and good energy, a real quality group of guys that come to work every day. We still have to get it done, so we’ll see how it pans out.”

Hofer’s players are just as excited about the upcoming season.

“We’ve had a lot of energy, a lot of energy, a lot of really good juniors coming in helping us seniors.” said Austin Stanchina, a senior tight end for the Flivvers. “We have a lot of returning starters from last year, so we’re ready to go. We’re ready for the season to start and get after it.”

“We have a lot of experience up front,” said Kingsford senior offensive lineman Drake Griggs. “A lot of us (played up front) last year. We have to play fast and get off of the ball quick. We should have a good season.”

Kingsford opens up their season at home against Minocqua Lakeland a week from tonight.
