Kids try hockey for free

HOUGHTON / HANCOCK / CALUMET — Hockey can be pretty expensive. That’s why a free beginner’s clinic is a great way to introduce kids to the sport.

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association invited kids who are interested in trying hockey for the first time to the “Try Hockey for Free” clinic held at Houghton County Arena.

CCJHA Auxiliary President Michele Lacourt says the event is part of USA Hockey’s “Come Play Hockey” month.

The CCJHA Auxiliary President Michiele Lacourt said, “This event has been going on across the United States for many many years. Just in the last 3 years, Copper Country Junior Hockey decided to host the event here to get more younger people interested in playing hockey.”

The kids received a free jersey along with an opportunity to try out their hockey skills before their parents made the financial commitment that comes with any sport.

Like other sports, hockey keeps kids active… on the ice and away from the TV.

CCJHA is holding a mite tournament November 20th to 22nd at the Michigan Tech SDC.

Lacourt said, “There we have mite teams from across the U.P. that come and they’ll play mini games against each other. It’s just like a tournament that would be held for the older age groups.”

The Copper Country Junior Hockey season has already started, but it’s not too late to introduce your kid to the community’s favorite sport.
