ISHPEMING — It may be wet and windy outside, but that hasn’t stopped some local kids from hitting the trails.

Tuesday was the Youth Mountain Biking Development Group’s Sponsorship Ride. Area kids find sponsors to donate for every mile they ride. The funds go towards the Partridge Creek Farm, Great Lakes Recovery Center and the Ishpeming Lions Club.

“This is a good group, they like to ride and they like to get out there and do things. It’s very interesting to see them respond when they realize what they’re helping. Sometimes the kids really get it, they say, ‘Wow, we’re doing this and this really helps people,’ and they get excited and they want to put on as many miles as they can,” said Dan Perkins, who helped put today’s event together.

But, the ride isn’t just about the money. The Youth Mountain Bike Development Group also hopes to teach kids a new hobby.

“The Youth Mountain Biking Development Group is a non profit group and they get kids interested in bikes and they put helmets on their heads and teach them the ways of the trails and how to ride them. We have beautiful trails in Ishpeming,” Perkins added.

The Youth Mountain Biking Development Group hopes to raise over a thousand dollars with Tuesday’s ride.
