CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP — Students at a local elementary school got into the spirit of giving Thursday.

Cherry Creek Elementary School in Chocolay Township hosted its third annual holiday craft sale. The sale, put on by parent volunteers, is designed to help kids check items off their Christmas shopping lists.

“It allows our children to come in and purchase gift items for their parents or family, extended family, maybe even their dog,” said Jim Mackey, a parent volunteer.

Twenty-five parent volunteers helped some of the younger students shop, while the older kids got to handle their own gift budgets. Eighteen local vendors brought a variety of crafts for young shoppers to choose from.

“The vendors really work with the children. So if you show up with three dollars, they’re probably going to be able to find you an item so you can get something for your grandma or granddad,” said Mackey.

“They tell us who it’s going to, so we write the names on it and wrap up the present for them, so then they’re all set for Christmas. They don’t have to worry about wrapping,” said vendor Lori Johnson.

Organizers charge each vendor a small fee for a table, and that money is used to help out the kids who may not be able to afford Christmas gifts for their families.
