The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has been given the OK by the U.S. Interior Department to move its Marquette County casino from Chocolay Township to Negaunee Township.

On Tuesday, according to an article published December 20 in The Wall Street Journal, Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk approved an application from the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

At the same time, the department says he rejected an application from the Cayuga Nation of New York to buy land for a casino in Seneca County, N.Y. Echo Hawk says the application didn’t meet all department rules.

The 3,310-member Keweenaw Bay group is located in Baraga County and has operated the Ojibwa Two Casino in neighboring Marquette County for 11 years.

The decision allows the tribe to move the casino to an 80-acre site at the former Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township.
