Ishpeming Township Drowning
A Dickinson County man is dead by drowning in Ishpeming Township over the weekend while he was out hunting.
On Saturday morning, 22-year-old Cody Shirkey was duck hunting on Pike’s Pond with a friend of his.
State troopers from the Negaunee post say the 2 finished their hunt at about 9am.
On their way back to shore, their boat became unstable, took on water and sank.
The 2 men tried to swim the rest of the way.
Shirkey didn’t make it, but his friend, 24-year-old Dale Alongo of Ishpeming, did reach land safely.
Neither man was wearing a life preserver.
Divers from the Marquette County Search and Rescue team found Shirkey’s body at about 11:30 Saturday morning.
