Ishpeming schools discusses growth

ISHPEMING — A Board of Education meeting was held tonight for Ishpeming Public Schools. One of the notable items on the agenda was for approving a bid project for the high school.

The building and grounds committee reported on their progress. A number of closed meetings have been set to continue the process for the bid project.

“We just started the process to negotiate,” said superintendent John Summerhill, “we started to lay some groundwork on our meetings and where we’re going. We’re looking to have a productive session with our education association.”

The board also learned about the progress of I-NEWS, the student run news program that started earlier this spring. The program is advised and taught by Scott Syrjala, although he gives all of the credit to the students. After receiving first prize for a grant, the I-NEWS program has many ideas on how to continue with their success.

“We want to be able to stream live,” said I-NEWS lead editor Tommy Potter, “and we’re also going to be in charge of the Ishpeming peg channel. Once we’re in charge of the peg channel we can run the announcements which will lift a huge burden off the city.”

The board was very impressed with the accomplishments made by I-NEWS so far and the program will be continued during the next school year.
