Ishpeming Recreation & US-41 Projects

The city of Ishpeming and the city’s Downtown Development Authority are planning several new projects to spur the downtown area.

Tonight, city staff wanted city residents to learn about the projects.

They are a pair of recreational sites on the Hematite Heights property and improvements to the gateways to downtown along US–41.

The public feedback will enter into how ishpeming decides to attract visitors, businesses and residents to the downtown.

City Manager Jered Ottenwess says the DDA and the City Council will consider the feedback and will likely make changes to both projects based on what residents say.

Once the projects are taken to the final proposal stage, the city’s master plan will be revised to include them.

And state grant money is a big part of the process.

Ottenwess says the city will apply for state grants for the projects in either April or May, and if those are approved, construction will start in 2013.

U.P. Engineers & Architects of Houghton is helping city staff and the DDA design the projects.
