Only one measure is before voters in Iron County May 8: the Hematite Township General Levy Increase.

This measure seeks to increase the current levy by a rate of $5 per $1,000 of assessed value for a period of five years in order to further pay for general needs in the township.

The question on the ballot:

Shall the present tax rate be assessed against the taxable property in Hematite Township, Iron County, Michigan, for all purposes be increased as provided by Section 6, Article 9 of the Constitution of the State of Michigan by five (5) mills, $5.00 per $1,000.00 of taxable value for the years 2013 – 2017, all inclusive, the money raised to be used exclusively for general township purposes? This levy would raise an estimated $75,584.40 in the first years.” (This being a renewal of the five (5.0) mills which expires with the 2012 Tax Levy.)
