Indy Car Driver Dies in Crash

Dan Wheldon, the 2005 IRL Indy Series Champion and winner of the Indianapolis 500 in both 2005 and 2011, has passed away after sustaining injuries on Lap 13 of the Las Vegas 300 Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened on Turn #2 of the race, involved 15 total cars.
Wheldon was airlifted from the track to a University Medical Center, where he passed away from his injuries.

The Las Vegas 300 was the last race of the IZOD Indy Car Series schedule for 2011.

Wheldon, an England native, was 33 years old. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
