Illinois man seriously injured in snowmobile crash

One man was injured in Ontonagon County when his snowmobile struck trees early Saturday morning.

Officers from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office say the accident happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. on trail #1 around 4 miles south of M-64. 53-year-old Michael Sutcliffe of West Chicago, Illinois, was traveling southbound when his 2003 Polaris snowmobile left the trail and ran into the trees.

Sutcliffe sustained serious injuries in the incident. He was transported to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital and later airlifted to Marquette General Hospital.

Police say it is unknown at this time why Sutcliffe’s snowmobile left the trail. The incident is still under investigation.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Rockland Volunteer Fire Department and Sonco Ambulance.
