Ice testing for civilian aircraft

MARQUETTE — Recently, residents in the Marquette area may have seen some unusual aircraft flying over head.

Officials from the U.S. Army Redstone Test Center based in Alabama say they have been conducting icing tests in the area with a RC–12G Beech King Air Helicopter and a CH–47. The tests are in support of a civilian helicopter program seeking a Federal Aviation Administration certification to fly in icy conditions.

In the test the CH–47 uses what officials call a “Helicopter Icing Spray System” — or HISS — to test the effects ice accumulation has on the fixed–wing aircraft.

Officials say the Marquette area has the perfect weather to conduct the tests, which will continue through April.
