Icebreaker draws in visitors

MARQUETTE — Anyone walking past the Lower Harbor in Marquette may have noticed a large boat docked.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw came in for its yearly inspection and training. The ship is originally stationed downstate in Cheboygan but was just coming from another mission in Duluth, Minnesota. Members of the Michigan State Police dive team assisted with the training as well.

“We pulled in for a port call last night or yesterday afternoon rather, this is a training mission for the active duty” said U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Volunteer, David Potter.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s website, U.S.C.G.C Mackinaw is the only heavy icebreaker in the Great Lakes and has been around for more than 50 years. The ship that lays at more than 230 feet drew in visitors from all over the area to take a peak.
