Huskies volleyball wins road match at Walsh

CANTON, Ohio — Michigan Tech earned its fifth GLIAC win of 2014 with a 3-0 victory at Walsh tonight. The Huskies swept their third league opponent using scores of 25-20, 28-26 and 25-20.

Sylvie Rokosh and Lauren Emmert continued to lead the Black and Gold offense. Rokosh put down nine balls from the right side with a .259 percentage. Emmert posted seven kills and a .300 hitting percentage from the middle. Aubrey Havlichek also had nine kills.

‘We came out strong and hit a bit of a lull towards the end of the first set, which seemed to continue through the second,” said Tech coach Matt Jennings. “Credit Walsh for fighting and doing some good things against our attack.

“Road wins don’t come easily in this league, and I’m glad we finished well and came away with the sweep.”

Tech jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the opening set and finished it off on a block by Rokosh for the 25-20 final.

Set two saw the score tied at 20, 21, 22 before Tech had two set points. The Cavaliers fought off both and had a set point of their own at 25-24. A Kendall Ward kill knotted it back up at 25-all. Rachel Pohlod finished off the set with a kill at 28-26.

Two kills down the stretch in set three put the Huskies in the driver’s seat. Emmert’s block sealed the victory at 25-20.

Pohlod finished with 35 assists for the Huskies. Halie Hart (13), Elle Heinonen (12) and Jacqueline Aird (11) all finished in double figures for digs.

Michigan Tech continues its three-match Ohio road trip with a GLIAC tilt at Malone tomorrow at 2 p.m.
