Huskies men’s basketball looks to continue their recent success

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech Huskies are coming off their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament but to get there this year, they will have to do it without a crucial piece from last year, All–American guard Ben Stelzer. And coach Kevin Luke knows that’s going to be a tough void to fill.

“You can’t ever fill it with one person. But I do think we have very capable returners that can help make up for those points, rebounds, assists and leadership. It has to be done by committee and certainly our guys are looking forward to that task,” Luke said.

The Huskies will have four seniors returning to this year’s squad and the team has a lot to improve on to maintain their lofty expectations.

“Some things we’re looking to work on this season is to get better experience and work together. We’re looking to improve on defense and improve on our shot–making and winning some games,” guard Jeff Gregory said.

“Just trying to get out here, get working as a team together, working on some defense especially. That’s a weakness in our game right now and also kind of a new offense in. So we got to focus on that. Swinging the ball, finding open guys and attacking the hoop,” said forward Luke Heller.

“When gametime rolls around, we want to be very competitive and certainly we want to be in the running for the conference and hopefully if we do those kind of things…we do take care of the fundamentals and pay attention to detail, we’ll give ourselves a chance for everything else that comes,” Luke said.

Michigan Tech open the season Wednesday night with exhibition action against the Finlandia Lions.
