Huskies make it to NCAA tournament

HOUGHTON — It was a bittersweet weekend for the Michigan Tech Huskies.

After defeating Bowling Green in the semi–finals, they couldn’t quite carry that momentum into the conference championship as they fell to Minnesota State 5 to 2. The Huskies were up 2–1 going into the third period. But four goals from Minnesota State in the third sealed the deal for the number one team in the country.

Michigan Tech did make it to the NCAA tournament. They are a 2 seed and will play St. Cloud State this Friday in Fargo, North Dakota. And support from the fans is one thing they will definitely need.

“We had a great turnout down in St. Paul. It was pretty awesome to see how loud and how many people there were supporting us. We know it’s a little bit more of a drive to go out to Fargo but hopefully we can get just as big of a crowd out there,” Kero said.

“You can really hear the fans in the crowd going wild once in a while and it’s good that we have a little bit of a following and it’s good that they were challenging Mankato’s following a little bit too and hopefully they will make it out to Fargo for us,” said Watson.

“We’re looking forward to it. The matchup against St. Cloud…we’re familiar with them from the WCHA. I saw them play last year in the regional in the NCAA tournament. We’re familiar with them and I like the style they play. They’re well coached. It’s going to be a huge challenge for us. But at the same time, it’s a great opportunity to be in the tournament, just to be playing anyone at this point,” Pearson said.

The Huskies currently rank #5 in the nation, dropping from #4 last week. The matchup will be this Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner will go on to face either Quinnipiac or North Dakota for a spot in the Frozen Four.
