Huskies football looking for first win in Allendale since ’97

HOUGHTON — 1977 is a significant year for the Michigan Tech football team as that was the last time they defeated Grand Valley State in Allendale and Saturday, they want to end that losing streak.

It will be the 29th all–time matchup between the Huskies and Lakers, with GVSU holding the advantage in the series 24 to 4. So they’ll need to be on point when they head into Lubbers Stadium.

“It’s a crowd and environment that can either bring out the best in you or the worst in you. We’re looking forward to that challenge. I want to see when our young people go out there, their eyes and if they’re excited to play and go after those poeple, which is what we think will happen,” said MTU head coach Tom Kearly.

Michigan Tech comes into the game ranked in the top ten for the first time since 2005. Coach Kearly said this week, the team began preparations by looking at the teams they have faced and the teams they will face.

“The one that jumps at you right now is that our next four opponents are 21 or 20 and 3. There’s three losses between the four schools so we understand what’s ahead of us. But it’s also an opportunity to go down into some environments at your Ashland’s, at your Ferris’s, at your Grand Valley’s and get a chance to play those people and that’s why you play the game,” Kearly said.

The game will be in Allendale tomorrow with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
