Huskies finish fifth in GLIAC men’s tennis

MIDLAND, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up its 2013 season with a 5-0 victory over Grand Valley State today in the fifth-place match of the GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies finished the year with a 17-9 overall record.
Tech swept doubles for the second straight day at the tournament. Javier Oliveros and Built Yumuang earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles while Andrew Kremkow and Jimmy Konarske paired for an identical win at No. 3. At No. 1 doubles, Felipe Dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez fought off double match point down 7-3, then won six straight games for a 9-7 decision.
The momentum carried into singles where Rodriguez and Konarske cruised to straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively. Rodriguez won by a 6-1, 6-1 score to finish the season with Tech’s best record at 20-5. Konarske was a 6-2, 6-0 victor. The other four singles matches were left unfinished.
With the 5-0 win over the Lakers, the Huskies defeated another team it had lost to in the regular season. GVSU topped Tech 5-4 in Allendale back on Mar. 23. Tech exacted revenge on Tiffin yesterday.
“The weekend was a little bittersweet,” said head coach Kevin Kalinec. “We would have liked to beat Wayne on Friday to finish in the top four, but we got two wins over teams we lost to earlier in the season and finished fifth. Overall, it was a good weekend and a season that we can build on for the future.”
The lone senior on the team is Andrew Kremkow, who played to a 13-12 doubles record and 2-2 singles record in 2013.
Michigan Tech’s 17 wins were the most for the program since 2003 (17-6).
