Huskies and No. 10 Lakers play to a draw
HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech played to a scoreless draw with No. 10-ranked Grand Valley State in GLIAC women’s soccer today at Sherman Field. The Huskies are now 9-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in GLIAC play with two games remaining in the regular season. The Lakers have a 14-2-1 record (9-1-1 in the GLIAC).
“I’m so proud of our team,” said Tech coach Michelle Jacob. “We stepped up and put our heart and soul into this game. Grand Valley’s a great team, and we were able to possess the ball and create some chances.”
Tech goalkeeper Jenna Phelps had a strong game with a season-high 11 saves, several of which neutralized great scoring chances for the Lakers. Phelps made a diving stop in the 37′ to rob GVSU’s Jenny Shaba.
Seven minutes later, Janelle Riedl had perhaps Tech’s best chance. She got behind the defense and fired high as a Lakers’ defender was closing.
Huskies’ defender Emily Morin did her part to keep the game scoreless two minutes into the second half as she headed away a shot.
Phelps made a big save on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 73rd minute. She was called upon twice more in the 76th minute to stop a Shaba drive and a rebound attempt from Marti Corby.
The teams played through 20 minutes of overtime scoreless. Both teams registered a shot on goal in extra time.
Grand Valley State held a 25-12 advantage in shots and a 11-7 edge in shots on goal.
Michigan Tech will travel to Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Oct. 30) for its next match. The Huskies and Cardinals are currently tied for third in the GLIAC standings.
