MARQUETTE — No injuries were reported after a house fire in Marquette Saturday evening.

Firefighters from the Marquette City Fire Department say they were dispatched to a residence on the 200 block of East Magnetic Street shortly after 9:00 p.m. after reports of smoke in the basement of the house. When they arrived, they found that all occupants had been alerted by a working smoke detector in the basement and were able to safely exit the home.

A suppression crew entered the basement and was able to get the fire under control in about 10 minutes. Smoke was ventilated from the residence. Firefighters say the basement was heavily damaged by smoke and heat, while the first and second floors received moderate smoke damage.

Residents were housed at a hotel with help from the Pigs-N-Heat fund. The Marquette City Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Marquette City Police Department, UP Health System – Marquette Unit 141, the Marquette Board of Light and Power, and Semco Natural Gas.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
