Houghton Police Family Fun Day

School may be starting next week, but kids got one more treat for the summer.

It’s the 4th annual Family Fun Day hosted by the Houghton Police Department.

Because of growing crowds, today’s event had to be moved from the City Center to Kestner Waterfront Park.

Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly said, “At our police department, space is limited.  We were kind of outgrowing it. We had more and more kids every year, so we figured we’d try it out down here down at the park and it seems to be working out real well.”

Besides fun games and yummy food, McGruff the Crime Dog stopped by to say hello.

It was also a great opportunity to get the children fingerprinted for mom and dad’s records…just in case.

But the big event was the donut eating contest, and for the second year in a row, the chief had to tip his cap to the winner.

“I guess I’m going to have to practice on my donut eating year-round,” joked Donnelly.  “The rules always seem to change against me.  The goat’s milk definitely didn’t help.  Trying to wash down donuts with goat’s milk was pretty tough.”
