High School Theatre Day at NMU

About a hundred high school students from around the U.P. visited Northern Michigan University this afternoon for Theatre Day.

Students interested in theater got experience and some training from college actors and teachers. They got to try their hand at stage combat, improv and musical theater. Students were also introduced to behind-the-scene jobs such as stage management, lighting and painting.

“It’s an opportunity for them to interact with our faculty and our students and to learn some new skills and our theatre and get to see our facility,” Forest Roberts Theatre director Ansley Valentine said. “It’s mostly for fun, but hopefully some of the students will think about coming to Northern.”

“Learning how to fake punch and slap and how to defend yourself when someone is attacking you is pretty cool,” Republic-Michigamme student Hunter Schultz said. “It’s fun; I like it.”

University staff members say they’re considering making this an annual event.
