Hematites stun Miners in opening round of districts

Most people doubted that Ishpeming could top their rivals Negaunee and again, they proved everyone wrong.

The Hematites knocked off the Miners 55–54 last night at Westwood High School. It marked the second straight year that Ishpeming sent Negaunee packing in the districts and both games were decide by just one point.

Here’s postgame reaction from the team as they celebrated another improbable win.

“We knew we had to prepare for this game all year and we came through. It’s really an unbelievable feeling. We knew we had to bring top energy for this game and it’s unbelievable,” Holmgren said.

“We knew we could get it. We knew we could do it. We just got a little doubt in their minds from last year that just carried over to this game. We just came out to play. It was unbelievable,” said Finegan.

“Negaunee is an unbelievable basketball team but our kids just have that resiliency that we talk about all the time in football. We came back from a couple of large deficits this year, and those types of games help you in an atmosphere like this so kudos to our kids,” Olson said.

The Hematites will face Gwinn tomorrow night at 6pm at Westwood.
