Hancock man charged with criminal sexual conduct

A Hancock man is out of jail on a personal recognizance bond after being arrested for child sexual abuse.

Michael J. Kangas, 37, is charged with three counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Two of the counts are said to involve separate incidents with a child under the age of 13. The third count involves a child between the ages of 13 and 16.

Kangas has been arraigned in 97th District Court in Houghton, and he has not had to pay any bond so far. He’s been confined to house arrest except to go to work, and if he violates those terms, he will owe the court $10,000.

If convicted, Kangas could go to prison for up to 15 years and could be forced to wear an electronic monitoring device for the rest of life. His District Court preliminary exam is scheduled for December 20th.
