Haidar's 25 leads Tech Men over SVSU

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will play for the GLIAC North Division Championship Saturday (Feb. 25) after a 85-58 conference win over Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Feb. 23).

The North Division Title will go to the winner of Saturday’s game between Tech and Northwood.

“Our guys had a lot of energy tonight and it showed,” said coach Kevin Luke.

The Huskies enjoyed a great night shooting the ball. The Huskies shot 56-percent (28-50) from the field and 46-percent (11-24) from behind the arc.

Saginaw struggled shooting from the field finishing at 36-percent (20-56) and 27-percent (4-15) from deep.

The two teams missed just two free throws combined. Tech finished 18-of-19 (95-percent) and Saginaw was 14-15 (93-percent).

Tech (14-11, 12-6) led 42-27 at half and led by as many as 31 with three minutes remaining.

“I like the way that we shared the basketball and played defense,” said head coach Kevin Luke.

Junior Ali Haidar tallied his 13th double-double of the season scoring a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Windsor, Ont., native shot 7-of-11 from the field and tied the school record for free throw shooting percentage making all 10 free throws.

Sophomore Alex Culy made four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points. Senior Mike Hojnacki scored 13 points, and sophomore Austin Armga added 12.

Tech out-rebounded SVSU 33-26 and finished with 17 assists on 28 baskets.

Freshman George Goodman led the Cardinals with 18 points.
