H.S. Hockey: Houghton blanks Marquette

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Houghton Gremlins are on a mission this year, after last season’s campaign ended in a 2-1 loss to Sault Ste. Marie in the state quarterfinals.

The Gremlins pitched a shutout at home Tuesday night, 5-0 against Marquette. Jonathan Bostwick had two goals and one assist to lead Houghton in the scoring department. Marcus Gloss stopped all 16 shots he faced to get the shutout and the win.

In Dickinson County, Escanaba’s Levi Wunder scored the go-ahead goal with 1:55 left, as the Eskymos won the game 4-2 over Kingsford. Flivvers forward Marcus Andrews scored two goals in the third period.

Also winning on the road Tuesday night was Jeffers. The Jets went to L’Anse and defeated the Purple Hornets, 2-1. Brendan Middleton scored both goals for Jeffers, including the game winner on a breakaway in the third period. Kyle Maki scored the lone goal for L’Anse for his first goal of the season. Brendan Sullivan stopped 33 shots in net for the Jets and Michael Turunen stopped 34 shots between the pipes for L’Anse.
