Guts Frisbee Tournament Results
The Appleton Assassins made a statement about where the future of Guts
Frisbee is headed by defeating the Cupola Bandits 21-6, 21-5, Sunday at
the 55th Annual Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament. They won
$2,000 for their efforts.
Using outstanding throws by Alex and Josh Tews and a smothering team
defense, Appleton was unbeatable, and unbeaten, all weekend long.
In fact, Alex Tews established a new speed record for Frisbee throwing.
He was clocked at 85 mph, beating the old record of 84 mph.
Cupola, who took home $1,000, had come through the loser’s bracket,
defeating O’Malley’s Alley of Marquette. Blame the Dog of Wisconsin and
Illinois took fourth place, with Ridin’ High of Detroit fifth, and Disc
Connected, a mixed team, sixth.
In a tribute to toughness, Bill “Brock” DePetro of Cupola won the Healy
Family MVP Award as he played through a torn hamstring injury, propelling
Cupola to the finals. It was the last IFT for Cupola, who are retiring
the name after 32 years.
Bruce Richardson of Disc Connected won the Jon Davis Spirit of Guts
Award, for “exemplary sportsmanship, quality of play, and, most
importantly, having fun.”
A distance competition was also held, with Jeff Banghart of Ridin’ High
winning with a throw of 83.5 yards in the finals. Fourteen teams participated in the event, which will be held July 8 and 9, 2013, in Calumet.
