Granholm: Expect Public School Cuts in State Budget

Whatever else the 2010 state budget holds, some cuts to public schools will be part of it.

That’s the word from Governor Jennifer Granholm.

The Michigan House and Senate are racing to finish a new budget in time for the start of fiscal 2010, which is midnight next Wednesday night.

Granholm says she knows no one wants big cuts to K-12 education, college financial aid programs like the Michigan Promise Scholarship, or health care and day care.

But on the state House floor today, the governor said all Michigan residents need to be prepared for some cuts.

She’s said more than once that she wants some tax or fee increases so that those sorts of programs won’t see huge cuts.

Lansing is trying to eliminate a $2.8 billion budget deficit.
