GLIAC Volleyball: Ashland 3 NMU 2

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Northern Michigan volleyball team had its six-match win streak snapped with a loss at Ashland University on Saturday (Sept. 22) afternoon. The Wildcats are now 3-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 10-3 overall.

The Eagles (10-2, 3-1 GLIAC) took the first set 25-16, before Northern came back to win the second and third sets (25-2, 25-21). Ashland won the fourth set with extra points (29-27) and closed out the match 15-10 in the fifth set. “

We played well defensively with almost 100 digs today,” NMU coach Dominic Yoder said. “We had a chance to win it in the fourth set but just didn’t finish it.”

Junior Lina Lopes led the way for NMU with 18 kills while junior Sarah Hamilton added 14. Freshman Lisa Studnicka and junior Kalli Herron each added nine kills.

Junior Kellisha Harley setup the offense with 54 assists and led the team with 24 digs.

Freshman Alex Berger added 23 digs while Lopes had 22. Studnicka had the lone service ace for the ‘Cats.

For the Eagles, Brittany Snider led her team with 29 kills and added 14 digs. Megan Rohlfs earned 21 digs and Marci Zagarac added 20 more. “

Brittany Snider is a great player for Ashland and she was so good all day,” Yoder said. Both teams finished the game with 63 kills. Ashland led the way with digs (97-95).

Northern plays its home-opener on Tuesday (Sept. 25), hosting Michigan Tech at 7 p.m. The Huskies are 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the GLIAC. “Our team is very excited to finally be playing a home match in front of our fans,” Yoder added.
