Glenn Seaborg 100 Years Old
Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg was born in Ishpeming 100 years ago today.
He discovered Plutonium and was part of the Manhattan project.
Seaborg is credited with the discovery of ten elements used today in fire detectors and medical technology.
He was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry in 1951.
Several centers of learning are named for him – including the Glenn T. Seaborg center at northern Michigan university.
The year before Seaborg died, element number 106 of the periodic table was named Seaborgium in his honor in 1998.
